What does God value most in creation?

What does God value most in all of creation? That is a different question from what does God value most. Here’s what I mean by that: of all the things that God values, loves and cherishes, the thing that he cherishes and values most is himself. Now, that strikes some people as theologically egotistical or in some way wrong. I assure you, it is not wrong for God to know that he is supreme in all of the created order, in all of human history, in all of the cosmos, etc. If he put anything above his affection for himself, he could not and would not be God.

We find examples of this in Isaiah. There is the example of God saying, “I will not share my glory with another.” “It’s for my name’s sake that I act for my name’s sake.” “I do what I do.” In other words, it is to protect me and my reputation that I behave like God. And so, the answer to what God values most is, theologically, He values God.

If I were to say, what do I love most in all of creation and my answer is me, that would be a sinful and egotistical mistake. I would not make that mistake. I know that there are things better than me, higher than me, more perfect, holy and unblemished than me for me to put my affections on. So, my answer should be I love God himself. Hopefully God, by his Holy Spirit, will enable me to make this more true as time goes on, but I have begun this recording with an altogether different question. This question is this: of all things in creation, what does God value most?

The answer to that particular question is human life. There is admittedly a bit of mystery in that, but let me take a passage from the Psalms for you. This is a famous passage from Psalm 8 that says this: “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of Him and the Son of Man that you care for Him? Yet, you have made Him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned Him with glory and honor.”

God has created man with inherent dignity and value. That is the reason for God to value human life above all other creations. We see that from scripture. We recognize that God is supreme and because we value God we value what God values which is human beings. We value human life because God values it.
