(Among countries with 10 million+ people.)

China

World Ranking: #2

China suffers the second highest abortion rate in the world.

(Among countries with 10 million+ people.)

The Scale of the Crisis

Abortion Average

In China,

35.84%

of all known pregnancies ended in abortion.

(Excluding fetal deaths and miscarriage.)

This means that approximately 4 out of every 10 babies conceived are aborted.

Abortion Ratio

For every 1000 babies born in China, another

558

were aborted.

This means that for every 10 babies born, approximately 6 more are aborted.

Highest Global Abortion Rates*

The abortion rate is the number of women out of every 1000, age 15-39, that had an abortion in a single year.

Abortion Data Source

Worldwide, official abortion statistics are under-reported and incomplete. In some cases, like Guatemala, no data is available. In India, (by most estimates, second only to China in abortion numbers) official data is too incomplete to use.

Our data source is the Abortion Worldwide Report (AWR) [Informe Mundial del Aborto (IMA)] (Jacobson and Johnston, 2018). They provide reported and estimated abortions by year for 110 countries and other areas through 2015. You can find updates to this data here.

The Work

PassionLife teams have made 29 trips to China since 2010. To date, over 48,000 house church pastors have been trained to teach the Gospel of Life to their people and lead them to answer God’s call to rescue the innocent.

Simplified, reproducible resources on biblical bioethics, prolife apologetics and crisis pregnancy intervention are translated and freely available in Mandarin Chinese.

The Impact

Since 2010, over 3 million people have been challenged to cherish human life, reject abortion, offer the grace of the gospel to cleanse the guilt of abortion and rescue pregnant mothers in their communities from abortion.

While data is not collected by churches (for security reasons), thousands of anecdotal stories of rescue have been shared. A hotline has been set up. A safe home for mothers was opened. Even some state-run hospitals are now seeing the value of offering alternatives to abortion and are setting up offices in the OB-GYN wing of the hospital to offer life-affirming choices to women in crisis.

The Challenge

Throughout the world, perhaps there is no more highly recognized stimulus for abortion, infanticide and gendercide (the killing of baby girls) than China’s One-Child (now Two-Child) Policy.

It is the Christian Church, maturing in a biblical view of human value, that is slowly rejecting abortion. Though they are now facing a new wave of crushing government restrictions, they nonetheless represent China’s best hope for reversing China’s dire demographic decline.

Where abortion is most concentrated, you are most needed…

Three ways YOU can advance the work:

Connect

Do you have connections in China? You can send them Gospel of Life Chinese (Mandarin) resources and introduce us to them or encourage them to reach out to Mark Nicholson at mnicholson@passionlife.org.

Who knows? You may open a door for advancing a new work in one of the neediest countries in the world!

Give

Your gift to PassionLife will advance the ongoing work in China, where we have a major initiative already underway.
