The Situation

Leaders in Vietnam generally agree that the under-reporting of abortion is particularly pronounced in that country and insist that Vietnam may actually have the highest abortion rate in Asia. Abortion rate is defined as the number of women out of every 1000, aged 15-39, who had an abortion in a single year.

PassionLife conducted its first training in Vietnam in 2017. David and Pushpa Waters attended this training and have since spearheaded PassionLife’s work in Vietnam. Today, over 50,000 Vietnamese believers have been equipped through the one-day training, including provincial and area leaders of more than 1,100 churches. These have begun teaching their congregations and friends. Our goal is to see 250,000 Christians trained in the 4 Questions within the coming year.

Our Strategy

Teaching the 4 Questions in a biblical, logical, and concise manner leads to the following outcomes:

  1. The treasuring of human life
  2. The rejection of abortion
  3. The proclamation of the Gospel, including Christ’s forgiveness, resulting in freedom from guilt.
  4. The rescuing of unborn babies by reaching one mother at a time.

Our strategy is to encourage rapid replication of our teaching content so that mothers and babies are rescued from abortion and come to faith in Christ.

The Church as an Army of Good Samaritans

Our observation of the Vietnamese Church is that it is courageous and mature. Soon after PassionLife first introduced the 4 Questions training, an indigenous group of Christian pastors, lay people, and medical professionals banded together to serve women in crisis. In collaboration with PassionLife’s regional coordinator, David Waters, and his wife, Pushpa, this group has made a goal of training every single Christian church in Vietnam in biblical bioethics and crisis intervention over the next several years.

As a result of the 4 Questions training, churches are becoming aware and engaged in helping pregnant and single moms; babies are being saved; the message of life is being proclaimed in churches and to their communities; “Counseling Corners” are opening at local clinics. Ultimately, families are transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Latest News

The 4 Question training is now run in the following languages: Vietnamese, Hmong, Dao, Khmer, and Ko Ho. And our goal is to make our training materials available in 7 more local languages, with training already underway among the Jarai, Hre, and Gia Trieng.

Books and manuals are printed with government permission. 44,000 of our 4 Question training manuals and other materials were printed this year, including the book, My Little Book about Big Issues, which teaches the purpose and connection between sex, marriage, and babies, confronting the ungodly myth of ‘safe sex.’ We pray it will help teenagers make responsible choices, lead to stronger families, and help prevent pre-marital sex, unwanted pregnancy, and abortion.

Duyen, a local believer, works alongside David and Pushpa by addressing the needs of young women who are posting questions regarding abortion in online forums. “I want to abort” is often actually a cry for help, and many women change their minds when someone reaches out to help them. From mid-2024 to mid-2025, Duyen helped 59 women keep their babies and get them connected to local churches.
